Tennis referee banned for seven years for fixing matches
An Italian tennis referee has received a seven-year and six-month ban along with a $50,000 fine after he admitted to allegations he worked to fix matches.
According to the Associated PressLorenzo Chiurazzi delayed entry, entered scores that did not reflect actual scores, and did not cooperate with the corruption investigation. The violations are said to have occurred at a tournament in Perguia, Italy in 2021.
The penalty was introduced by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), an upgraded version of the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) created in the following 2008 allegations of rampant match-fixing.
In 2011, Austrian tennis player Daniel Köllerer was banned for life by the TIU for fixing matches. Other players who will be punished for similar violations include Nicolás Kicker, Karim Hossam and Diego Matos. However, corruption allegations against referees are still few.
Chiurazzi’s punishment dates back to August 12, 2022, making him eligible to return to emergency duties in February 2030.
