Temper your expectations for USC but not Caleb Williams

All those delusional SoCal brothers flooding Vegas with USC national championship bets would be better off taking that money and pinning it to the wall or burying it. A title team includes more than Lincoln Riley and Caleb Williams because it takes a lot of talent to take on the Alabamas, Georgias and Ohio states of the world. Even with Pitt’s generous transfer of Jordan Addison, the Trojans would have to play perfect football to make it to the playoffs let alone win two innings.

So, based on that fact, allow me to offer another bet that, as the experts call it, is better value. I’m not really here to give betting advice. Most of what I know about gambling comes from popular culture or an infusion from many of my degenerate friends who still scream at the TV screens in the fall. That said, take Williams gives Heisman at +700 right now (if you haven’t split it with your title bet).

The two favorite contenders for the trophy – Ohio State’s CJ Stroud and Alabama’s Bryce Young – deserved the odds they were awarded. Young won it last year, and Stroud completed more than 70% of his throws while posting picky numbers – 4,435 passes, 44 touchdowns and just six interceptions. Tide’s QB mostly put out better stats than that (4,872 yards, 47 TDs and seven picks, with a 67 percent completion rate), which is why he walked away with the individual prize being awarded. College football’s highest rating.

Those numbers are objectively stunning, and if they surpass them, they will certainly be the leaders. That said, it’s hard to repeat those years. Matt Leinart’s total touchdowns dropped every year from his sophomore season through his senior year. Lamar Jackson scored less than six times in the run-up to his winning Heisman campaign.

I wouldn’t call it a retrograde because it’s hard to have a God-touched season when everyone has the game movie that the players were anointed with last season. The element of opponent’s familiarity and a few back-to-back runs from the one-meter mark, and it’s enough for the average professional to push through the hype like a child with the ability to know more about the game. where is a vegetable.

In Williams’ case, he didn’t come close to his stat cap as he didn’t see game time until after Spencer Rattler’s confusing 2021 Heisman campaign ended when he was benched first. Texas. Williams’ return is the stuff of legends, and as much as Texas wants to fix last year’s meltdown, the Longhorns won’t have that chance — at least not against Williams.

In eight plus games, the new Trojan’s QB had 1,912 yards in the air, 21 TD passes, four interceptions, and another 442 yards and six points on the ground. He can easily pass 3,000 yards this year with a full season at center, and the talent is well received on that team. I also wouldn’t be surprised if he eclipsed 1,000 meters above the ground as USC’s backyard is made up of new or old transfers and a freshman has combined with a 958 meter dash in 2021.

Despite all the transfers and hiring, USC will need Williams to do everything. The team has improved just enough, and the conference is still just weak enough, for 10 wins to be within the realm of possibility. Sometimes there can be a loss where Williams sits a quarter, but I’m believing Riley needs – and uses – him pretty much.

Plus, familiarity won’t be an issue. The only team in the Pac-12 to face Williams last season (Oregon) is not on the schedule unless they meet in the conference title game. The chances of the Trojans making that game could be a bit longer with commissioner George Kliavkoff eliminating detachments this year. That said, they won’t have to battle a pre-season No 7 Utah to get there, and No 11 Oregon has a question mark with a new coach and new (transfer) full-back, Bo Nix, who which I don’t trust at all.

Notre Dame and Utah were the toughest matchup on the schedule, and the Trojans didn’t play Golden Dome until the final game of the season. While Utes in Week 7 scares me, if Williams can come out without a performance like he did against Iowa State in ’21, show off against Notre Dame and win a game A possible rematch with Utah (or beating Oregon) to win the Pac-12, there will be tidal waves in favor of Williams’ Heisman candidacy.

And I haven’t even mentioned the history of the avid midfielders under Riley’s tutelage.

That’s it, USC fans. If you want the bettor to shout “Fight!” about the entire season, pick Caleb for Heisman, a bet you could actually win rather than a pipe dream.
