Here’s your 10-point guide to today’s by-elections:

  1. Telangana has been braced for a high-stakes battle between the BJP and Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s TRS party following allegations of attempts to steal his MLA with cash sums.

  2. Bypoll in Telangana’s Manugoda was called after the MLA Congress resigned and joined the BJP. The competition was largely between BJP’s RK Rajagopal Reddy, former TRS MLA Kusukuntla Prabhakar Reddy and Congress’s Palvai Sravanthi.

  3. TRS, recently renamed Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS), aims to show its dominance in state politics and win big nationwide. A loss would not only undermine its plans but also reduce opposition to council polls.

  4. Bihar will witness the first election test for Minister Nitish Kumar’s latest “Grand Coalition”, which was formed less than three months ago after his party abandoned the BJP and partnered with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) of Tejashwi Yadav and Parliament. Bypolls in the state are being held in Mokama and Gopalganj, previously held by the RJD and BJP respectively.

  5. In Haryana’s Adampur, the family of former Minister Bhajan Lal will try to hold on to the fort for five decades after his young son Kuldeep Bishnoi stepped down as MLA from his seat and moved from Parliament to the BJP in August.

  6. Mr Bishnoi’s son Bhavya is currently running as a candidate for the ruling BJP against former Union Minister Jai Prakash, a three-time MP and two-time MLA, of Parliament.

  7. In a battle of prestige, the BJP will hope to keep the seat of Gola Gorakhnath in Uttar Pradesh, which was vacated following the death of MLA Arvind Giri. With Mayawati’s BSP and Congress not participating in the contest, the fight will be between the BJP and Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party.

  8. The BJP will also hope to keep Dhamnagar in Odisha, where the death of the party’s MLA Bishnu Charan Sethi requires a poll. The son of the former MLA is running for the party against Minister Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal, which has consolidated its position in the region since the last election.

  9. In Maharashtra, Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray faction is expected to easily win the East Andheri Assembly constituency in Mumbai after the BJP pulled out of the competition, the first after the recent split of party.

  10. While these by-elections are not expected to have any effect on who runs the states, most parties have gone all out on the campaign trail to avoid defeat in power battles. credit. The results of the election will be announced on Sunday.
