Bihar Deputy Minister Tejashwi Yadav cleans a statue in London.

New Delhi:

Bihar Deputy Minister Tejashwi Yadav wiped a statue of Mahatma Gandhi with his handkerchief near the British Parliament at Westminster in London last month, a lawmaker from his RJD party said while sharing the video on Twitter.

“When Tejashwi Yadav ji I went to pay my respects at the historical bronze statue of the Fatherland … and found the statue dirty. Seeing this, he couldn’t stop himself and started wiping it with his handkerchief,” said Rishi Kumar, MLA from Obra area in Aurangabad district.

“His thoughts show his belief in Mahatma Gandhi and Gandhian thought,” MLA added, in his tweet in Hindi.

Tejashwi Yadav recently returned as Deputy Minister as Minister Nitish Kumar quit the BJP to revive the alliance with the RJD and Congress.

While many of the responses praised the act, there were others who called it a “public stunt”, saying that the statue didn’t have much dirt anyway. “Get your priorities right. See how dirty Patna is,” one Twitter user commented on the MLA’s post.

The 9 foot tall statue is based on a 1931 photograph of Mahatma Gandhi during his visit to the office of then UK Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald.

The statue was vandalized two years ago – “racist” was painted on it – during ‘Black Lives Matter’ protests about some of Gandhi’s views, mainly during his time in South Africa. It was announced by then-Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in 2015 – marking the centenary of Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa and the start of his struggle for Indian independence.

One of a number of statues of leaders located in the area, it was unveiled by then-British Prime Minister George Osborne during his visit to India in 2014 as “a fitting tribute to in memory of him … and a permanent monument to our friendship”.

Sculptor Philip Jackson made it after public donations were collected by a trust fund set up by prominent British Indians.
