Teenage girl breaks into her grandma’s safe, steals $13,500, and shares it with her classmates | US News
A 14-year-old girl has caused a stir at a Florida school after she allegedly gave more than $10,000 (£8,800) of her grandmother’s money to her classmates.
Police attended Lake Weir High School on Thursday after it was reported that a student had given students hundreds of dollars each, according to an arrest report.
The school is located in Summerfield, about 60 miles northwest of Orlando.
School officials searched the girl’s backpack and found about $2,500 (£2,211), deputies said.
The girl said that an unidentified former student gave her the money and wanted it shared.
Investigators said they later determined that the girl had broken into her grandmother’s safe and stolen about $13,500 (£11,942) of the woman’s life savings.
The arrest report did not say why the girl allegedly took the money or why she gave it to her classmates.
By Friday, officials had recovered about $700 (£619) of money that had been given to other students – as well as cash in backpacks.
The girl is facing charges of grand theft.
