Ted Leonsis emerges to potentially buy Nationals

Washington Nationals is up for sale, and the franchise has attracted a potential suitor that will be known to DC fans.

Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis is a potential suitor to buy Nationals, by Barry Svrluga, Ben Strauss and Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post. Leonsis has been given access to the organization’s financial data, an important step in the purchasing process.

Nationals attracted widespread interest when lead owner Ted Lerner discovered a sale. The Lerner family has left open the possibility of retaining ownership, but the report says there is confidence a sale could be approved by the end of the year. Leonsis is not the only suitor, as the organization has already met at least five potential buyers.

The National team is in the midst of a major rebuilding phase, firmly signaled by the team’s decision to swap Juan Soto in early August.

Leonsis is sure to be a famous suitor, though it remains to be seen whether he will be. The capital won the Stanley Cup thanks to his watch, but the Wizards have struggled to find consistent success, and part of that was blamed on Leonsis.

Forbes respect the country at $2 billion in March.
