Technology has helped people in remote areas access justice quickly: SC judge
Supreme Court Justice Surya Kant on Sunday highlighted the role of technology in modernizing the judicial system, stressing that technology integration has provided an essential interface between digitalization and the judicial process.
He delivered the speech at the concluding ceremony of ‘National Conference on Technology Landscape in Indian Courts and the Way Forward’.
Judge Kant stressed the importance of technology in bridging the gap between rural and urban areas, noting that people in remote areas can now access justice efficiently, quickly and effectively through the use of digital tools.
The conference served as a reflective forum, allowing participants to analyse the progress made so far and identify areas that still need attention in the ongoing process of court digitisation across India.

The discussions during the conference were not limited to theoretical concepts but also included practical demonstrations of innovative practices being implemented by many high courts across the country.
He concluded by reiterating that the ultimate goal of technology is to be a tool for achieving justice and fairness.
He also inaugurated several key initiatives, including a new advanced software development lab, an e-Gate card issuance facility and three themed murals, all through a virtual platform.
Supreme Court Justice Rajesh Bindal stressed the need for regular national conferences on judicial technology, advocating annual events and, if necessary, online meetings to keep the judiciary updated with technological advancements.

He said the importance of tools like the e-prison system has streamlined the management of prison records, making it easier for courts to access the latest information, thus speeding up the resolution of cases involving detainees.
Similarly, the Adalat IN app has improved access to court services for citizens, providing a more user-friendly and transparent interface for legal proceedings, he said.
Justice Bindal called for recording and sharing best practices across high courts to promote uniform adoption of technology and improve the justice system.
Justice Augustine George Masih discussed the transformative impact of technology and artificial intelligence on the judiciary, noting their role in automating tasks, improving case management and reducing case backlogs.
These advances are fundamentally reshaping the judiciary, making it more efficient and more responsive to public needs, he stressed.

By automating routine tasks and enabling smarter case management, technology has alleviated many of the traditional bottlenecks that once delayed the resolution of cases, he said.
