Tata Motors reveals new petrol engines for Harrier, Safari and Curvv SUVs


At Auto Expo 2023, in addition to revealing new models, Tata Motors also revealed two new powertrains. The brand introduces two new petrol engines. There is a 1.2 liter unit and a 1.5 liter unit so it seems the rumor is true. Most likely the new petrol engine will be used for SUV models such as Harrier, Tata and Curvv.

Current engines use high-pressure direct injection technology combined with an advanced combustion system. The engines are made of aluminum, which reduces weight and increases rigidity.

The Harrier and Safari diesels come with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed torque converter automatic.

Other technological improvements the engine received were dual cams, variable oil pump and integrated exhaust in the cylinder head. The variable geometry turbocharger is water cooled. Furthermore, the valve train and timing chain are maintenance-free, which also translates to increased reliability and low cost of ownership. Particular attention is paid to the treatment of exhaust gases to lower emissions.

Now, spec, the 1.2 liter engine is a three-cylinder unit that produces 123 hp at 5,000 rpm and 225 Nm of peak torque at 1,700-3,500 rpm. . Then there’s the 1.5-litre engine which is a four-cylinder unit. It produces 168 hp at 5,000 rpm and 280 Nm of peak torque at 2,000-3,500 rpm. Both engines are compliant with BS6 Stage 2 standards and can run on regular gasoline and E20 gasoline.

Currently, Harrier and Safari are only offered diesel engines while competitors offer petrol engines for their SUVs. The Harrier and Safari use a 2.0-liter diesel engine that is sourced from Fiat and is also being used on the MG Hector, Jeep Compass and Meridian twins. The engine produces 168 horsepower at 3,750 rpm and maximum torque of 350 Nm at 1,750-2,500 rpm. Tata has paired this engine with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
