Tamil Nadu Governor Returns Bill On Online Gaming

Tamil Nadu governor returns bill for online game

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has returned a bill passed by the council to ban online gambling and regulate online games. A highly respected source in the code said the Governor “has raised some questions. The Spokesperson’s office has received it.” But the move was seen by many as a continuation of the confrontational stance the state DMK government accused him of.

Congress passed the bill in October, after about 20 people died by suicide after losing in online gambling. “Now 44 people have died in the state,” a government official said.

Although the AIADMK government had previously enacted a law, the court annulled it.

The DMK, after coming to power, formulated the bill based on the recommendations of a committee set up specifically under former judge Justice K Chandru.

The bill, which aims to ban online gambling and regulate online games, also classifies a range of popular online games as “games of chance” controlled by computer algorithms.

Meanwhile, Governor Ravi met with representatives of the online gaming industry, prompting much criticism.

He has yet to agree with the 20 bills that have been passed by the state parliament, including those that seek to remove him from his position as president of state universities.

The ruling DMK and its allies have referred to the Governor as “an agent of the RSS and the BJP”.

He was accused of acting as an “obstruction to the development of the state”.

Minister MK Stalin wrote to President Droupadi Murmu, asking her to intervene and ensure that the Governor abides by the Constitution and his government’s advice.

In a great embarrassment to the Governor, the Secretary received a resolution passed by the state parliament to not record the Governor’s version of the speech that he omitted parts with names of politicians. leaders include Ambedkar and Periyar.

He also proposed to change the state’s name to Thamizhagam and get people emotional when it comes to religion.

RN Ravi recently said that “nothing prevents him from sharing his personal views” and that “he has the right to pause the bills and that’s a polite way to say no”.
