Revealed in Sony’s time PlayStation ShowcaseSword Of The Sea from Giant Squid Studio, the people behind 2016 Abzu and 2020 Godless, and you play as The Wraith, a lone adventurer on a mission to restore sunken cities that have been buried under a sea of golden dunes. The trailer is a sight to behold. Sand surfing looks super fluid, and the ability to do an epic flip while launching your skateboard away from some beautiful ancient architecture has great appeal. Along with the giant monster teased at the end of the trailer, expect some clashes with giant monsters.
Giant Squid’s creative director is Matt Nava, who is also the art director of Journey, so that explains all that the sand is beautifully rendered. The Journey comparison aside, Sword Of The Sea also fits the work of Giant Squid very well. The studio is always finding interesting ways to create a sense of freedom through movement – such as the graceful underwater diver in Abzû and the wicked agile archer in The Pathless – so The Wraith seems like they will complete the studio’s super-smooth trilogy.
Sword of The Sea will release on PC and PlayStation 5. It doesn’t have a confirmed release date (or even a Steam page), so until then you’ll find me in the attic looking for an old skateboard. mine.
