Horse racers in Sweden will no longer be able to use whips for encouragement when the new racing season begins in that country on April 10. Sweden’s racing governing body Svensk Galopp has announced a new rule allows jockeys to carry crops, but only use it “to prevent a dangerous situation.” Recently, horse racers in Sweden were allowed to hit their horses three times in a race. However, whips are not allowed in parachute races or races for 2-year-olds.

“The use of whips in Sweden has been discussed for many years,” said Helena Gartner, project director of the Scandinavian Racing Regulation Commission. Regulations have slowly changed and foam-cushioned clubs were introduced a few years ago, but now is the time to ban the use of whips altogether. Using whips in horse racing simply won’t be available by 2022.”
