Sweden Women’s 1 – 0 Belgium Women’s
Sweden set up a Euro 2022 semi-final against England after Linda Sembrant’s spectacular final goal helped them beat Belgium 1-0 in a tight quarter-final clash.
Although Sweden entered the match as a strong contender, it turned out to be a much closer match than could have been predicted, turning into a battle of wills as it take place.
Sweden thought they had taken the lead in the first half when Stina Blackstenius shot past goalkeeper Nicky Evrard. She collected a favorable pass from Kosovare Asllani before keeping her composure to beat the Belgian keeper, but after VAR check she was ruled offside.
The Swedes registered 33 shots at Leigh Sports Village, although most of these came from distance as they struggled to break a well-tolerated Belgian. However, it was an impressive end when Sembrant had to go home with extra time.
Evrard made some stellar saves throughout and nearly denied Sweden again, punching out of Asllani’s corner and blocking Natalie Bjorn’s follow-up. But there was nothing she could do as Sembrant returned home from close range with a rebound as Belgium were beaten in their first knockout at a major international tournament.
Sweden has now arranged an all-out semi-final meeting with hosts England on Tuesday night to secure a spot in the Euro 2022 final at Wembley on July 31.
