Suzuki suspends sales of three-door Jimny

SUZUKI Australia has halted the sale of automatic transmission variants of the hugely popular three-door Jimmy model until further notice.

The pause takes effect January 19, 2023 and has no specific end date, but the good news for potential buyers is that manual models are still available.

Considering the youth appeal and the fact that less than two-thirds of drivers under the age of 30 have a manual, it may be a long time before the compact classic 4×4 – a vehicle that has no competition direct competition.

Suzuki Australia said that the Lite and GLX models with 3-door manual transmissions are still being ordered again, but demand is not as overwhelming as the automatic models.

The two-tone color scheme has also proven successful, and Suzuki Australia says it is urging dealers to “consider their color preferences together with customers” to speed up delivery times.

The automaker says a sales pause is inevitable as demand continues to grow for the top-end three-door automatic Jimny.

“The number of orders for the Jimny three-door automatic transmission is skyrocketing and increasing every day,” said Suzuki Australia general manager Michael Pachota.

“As such, based on the volume vs order bank forecasts, we have no choice but to pause taking orders for this variant.”

Last year, Suzuki shipped 5697 Jimny models in Australia compared to the previous year’s 3350 sales, proving the classic budget 4×4 option – which will suit all terrains – is growing in popularity.

The used market reflects this popularity, with used three-door automatic transmission models costing as much as $50,000 for the relatively standard models and buyers expecting a little change. from $45,000 for a used Jimny, which could leave many people waiting for an upgrade stop.

When the GWM Tank 300 boomed, potential buyers could opt for the more expensive Chinese model. The Tank 300 starts at $55,990 with the drive away, compared to the attractive $29,990 (before on-road costs) of the Jimny three-door automatic.

There’s also a new five-door Jimny option, which will arrive in Australia in the second half of 2023, and although pricing has yet to be announced, it could be a bit cheaper than the GWM Tank 300.

If, by chance, potential buyers have a manual license and are open to the idea of a clutch, the paired budget Jimny Lite starts at $26,990 before hitting the road.

The pause in sales on automatic Jimnys may cause some people to learn how to use the third pedal.
