Supreme Court judge takes oath with ‘butterflies in stomach’ | India News



NEW DELHI: “Butterflies in the belly”, one person said nervously Justice PV Sanjay Kumar seconds after he reached the pinnacle of his judicial career when he was sworn in on Monday as a Supreme Court judge, an occasion that seemed to overwhelm him physically, making his hand she shivered slightly.

Justice Kumar was the third of the five to take the oath. The other four who have been sworn in as SC judges are Judge Pankaj Mithal, Sanjay Karol, Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Manoj Misra. With this, the SC’s working power has grown to 32 judges compared to the sanctioned power of 34 judges.
Justice Mithal was the most senior of the five who were sworn in on Monday. He was appointed judge of Allahabad HC in July 2006. He was appointed CJ of J&K and Ladakh in January 2021 and was transferred to Rajasthan HC as CJ in October 2022.
With Justice Karol sworn in as SC judge, Himachal Pradesh got representation in SC after a gap of more than two and a half years. But there are some HCs that are not represented in SC. Justice Karol was appointed HC judge in March 2007 and CJ of Tripura HC in November 2018. He was transferred to Patna HC as CJ in November 2019 and worked there until promoted to SC.
Judge Amanullah, who was appointed judge of Patna HC in June 2011, was selected to be the SC judge from the Muslim community following the retirement of Judge S Abdul Nazeer last month. Justice Amanullah was transferred to Andhra Pradesh HC for 8 months in 2020-21 before being transferred back to his mother HC.
Justice Misra, the youngest of the bunch, was appointed judge of Allahabad HC in November 2011, and served a longer seven-year term as a judge of SC. However, he will retire as the most senior judge, the rest is not. 2 for over two years as Justice Pardiwala becomes CJI in 2028.
With these appointments, both Allahabad HC and Delhi HC have the highest representation in SC with four judges each. Bombay and Gujarat HCs have three judges each in SC.
