Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo have teased the upcoming game The country tricked Kong expansion, going forward Super Nintendo world in Osaka, Japan. And in Nintendo Direct todaywe finally know when the expansion will open to the world — December 11, 2024.
We’ve had a few short teasers of the park over the years, but this Direct gave us a really clear look at what to expect. If you’re lucky enough to be in Japan when it opens, well… we’re pretty jealous!
To get to the new park, you have to pass the 1Up store and walk through a tunnel covered in rocks and bricks. The new area is Greatsport palm trees, Donkey Kong’s tree house and the Golden Temple.
Taking us on a tour of the park, Miyamoto took us to a music-themed game using conga drums, where you’ll need three people to team up and hit the drums in time with the lights. There are plenty of banana-flavored foods and drinks you can try (as well as special hot dogs with avocado-flavored sauce… hmm) as well as Funky’s Fly and Buy, a store where you can buy Many products related to DK goods.
Like the main Super Nintendo World, there are also plenty of interactive secrets with Power-Up Bands. But the big one will be familiar to Donkey Kong Country fans – letters have been hidden throughout the park, which you can “collect” and register on the Universal Japan app to spell Kong.
Inside the Golden Temple is a mine cart ride and this is where you’ll find a ton of impressive animatronics for Donkey Kong’s many characters and companions. It looks like a tiny roller coaster — and we’re glad Dixie is there to welcome you. But can we get Lanky Kong or King K. Rool, Nintendo?
The Donkey Kong Country expansion is announced back in 2021 and already Barrel opening was initially scheduled for spring 2024but it turns out, building the park takes a lot of time! At least we finally have a date. If you can’t make it to Japan this December, don’t worry, as Donkey Kong Country will be part of the opening of Super Nintendo World at Universal Florida in 2025.
