Richard Schaefer and Eddie Hearn agreed live on national radio that the giant flyweight unification clash between Sunny Edwards and Julio Cesar Martinez had to be done.
Edwards masterfully defended his IBF title at Probellum Evolution in Dubai on Saturday night and immediately turned his attention to Mexico’s WBC belt holder Martinez.
President Probellum Schaefer was at the talkSPORT studio on Tuesday (March 22) to speak with host Jim White when Matchroom chief Hearn joined them to discuss the undefeated Edwards’ chances of meeting Martinez.
Both strongly agree that if the WBC champion gets past a mandatory title defense later this year, the fight with Edwards must happen.
Edwards, nicknamed ‘Showtime’, then spoke to them by phone from his sun lounger on vacation in Dubai to reinforce that he was ready and waiting to take on Martinez.
“Can you two make a deal here?!” Jim White asked.
“I think everyone wanted that fight,” said Eddie Hearn.
“Edwards is a character and talks about rubbing people the wrong way! He’s a great guy, he’s very outspoken and he’s a very good fighter. He could, possibly, be the best on the team, but that’s between those two.
“Martinez against Sunny Edwards is definitely a fight we need to see.”
“This is one of the most talked about fights, and I agree with your assessment of Sunny, I think he’s an amazing self-promoter and he has the skills to help out. support it,” added Richard Schaefer.
“He’s a trash talker but he can really fight – he has it all.”
Hearn added: “There’s a great story about the fight and the history, because let’s not forget that Julio Cesar Martinez knocked out Sunny Edwards’ brother Charlie Edwards to win the WBC world title. But he actually hit him while he was on the floor after knocking him down and the fight was deemed no contest.
“There will be a lot of trash talk and Sunny is a nightmare! He showed up at Eddy Reynoso, at Canelo, of which Julio Cesar Martinez was part of the team, so building is all you want in a fight, you want two in. ”
Hearn went on to say, “Can you fight one in London and one in California?”
“Sunny is a celebrity, especially in the UK, so I’m sure we can build a nice show around it and have some Matchroom fighters go up against some Probellum fighters. and have fun with it!” Schaefer said.
IBF champion Edwards then surprised Hearn, joining the call and saying: “It was the fight that made the most sense.
“There were other good fights for both of us, in the division, but when you really think about it, there’s no other fight with the backstory and with the pre-construction.
“It’s a very interesting fight because it’s two completely opposite styles and it’s dividing opinions pretty much in the middle because if you ask half of the people, I’m going to be knocked down. just for a few minutes and the other half is telling everyone that I’m going to his school.
“I think it’s absolute with boxing and like Eddie said, it can happen anywhere.”
