Shimla:

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of Parliament, head of the party’s campaign committee in Himachal Pradesh, will be appointed as the next Minister, sources said today. Mr. Sukhu, 58, is an MLA from Nadaun in Hamirpur district. He will probably be sworn in tomorrow.

Mr Sukhu, the former speaker of the Himachal Pradesh Congress, is also a four-time MLA and is considered close to party leader Rahul Gandhi.

However, he did not have a smooth working relationship with six-time minister Virbhadra Singh, who passed away last July.

So far, the Head of State Parliament Pratibha Singh, wife of Virbhadra Singh, and Outgoing Parliamentary Opposition Leader Mukesh Agnihotri have been vying for the position of Minister.

A far cry from former emperor Virbhadra Singh, Mr Sukhu, as an activist at Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla, led the state unit of the National Federation of Students of India in his late years. 1980.

Earlier this evening, after learning Pratibha Singh would not be Prime Minister, her supporters protested at the hotel where the party’s centrist observers were staying. Yesterday, they stopped the car of Chief Minister Chhattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel, one of the center observers, before a key party meeting and affirmed their support for Pratibha Singh.

Pratibha Singh affirmed her claim to the job with a sharp reminder to the leadership in Delhi. She said that elections were taken and won in the name of Virbhadra Singh and it would be “a disaster” to get rid of his family.

But she did not receive popular support among the party’s 40 newly elected MLAs, which is why she was dropped from the contest, sources said.

During a meeting of Parliament’s senior command on Friday, the MLA allowed the party chairman to choose the legislative party leader who would also be the next prime minister.

Congress came to power after defeating BJP in parliamentary elections by winning 40 of 68 seats in parliament.
