Stop weapons supply to Myanmar, rights expert urges |

In a report to the UN Dong Nhan Quyen Association In Geneva, Special Rapporteur Tom Andrews asserted that these weapons were used against civilians.

He also appealed to the UN Security Council to convene an emergency session to vote on this trade ban resolution.

Remittance ‘shocks conscience’

“It cannot be denied that weapons used to kill civilians are no longer transferred to Myanmar. These transfers are a real shock to the conscience,” Mr. Andrews said in a statement statement.

“Preventing military atrocities begins with preventing their access to weapons. The more the world delays, the more innocent people, including children, will die in Myanmar.”

Mr. Andrews identified China, Russia and Serbia as the countries that have supplied weapons to Myanmar’s military rulers since they took power in a coup in February last year.

Weapons include fighter planes, armored vehicles, missiles and artillery.

Families in the Cross

“The people of Myanmar are begging the United Nations to act,” Mr. Andrews said. “They deserve an up or down vote on a Security Council resolution that will stop the sale of weapons used to kill them. Too many families are facing the weapons of war that Member States are providing. This must end”.

The report also names countries that have authorized arms transfers to Myanmar since 2018, a time he said when atrocities by the army against the Rohingya minority were widely documented.

It further calls for concerted action by countries to cut military access to revenue.

Mr. Andrews called on the Security Council to act.

“I urge the member states of the United Nations Security Council that are appalled by the murder of Myanmar civilians to come up with a solution to stop it,” he said.

“Transparency issues. The Security Council should at least consider a resolution banning weapons being used by the Myanmar military to kill innocent people.

Special rapporteurs like Mr. Andrews are appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council to monitor and report on country-specific situations or thematic issues.
