Stonestreet Star Campanelle Wins First US GSW in Women’s Sprint

It may be hard to believe, but the US runner-up – and international star –Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) won her first scoring event in the United States in the GIII Mint Ladies Sprint S. on Saturday at the Kentucky Downs. Of course, she’s a Group 1 and high-ranking winner in both Britain and France, but the most notable win for the American-trained and American-based 4-year-old on formerly American soil is Giant’s Causeway S. It was shipped to Royal Ascot after the Giant’s Causeway was decommissioned in third place in the G1 Platinum Jubilee S. June 18, not an easy feat among a field of 24 horses.
Campanelle has more frequent flyer miles than many: born in Ireland, she first started in the US (first win at Gulfstream), then transferred to Royal Ascot to win the race. G2 Queen Mary S. Returning to the US to train, she moved to France to win the G1 Darley Prix Morny, then returned to the state again to finish fourth in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. And that was just a 2 year old kid. Campanelle opened her 3-year-old campaign at Royal Ascot with a win at the G1 Commonwealth Cup, returned to the US for training, and moved abroad again but faltered in France at Deauville. She finished her sophomore year in the US and then started her 4-year-old account at Keeneland before her third account at Ascot and now Franklin, Ky. Combined, the dizzying schedule and top-notch wins have made Campanelle one of the highest-rated female sprinters in the world, leaving her 3-5 in the Women’s Sprint. nothing unexpected.
Her performance is also not surprising. Fourth close-up like Creative credits (Creative cause) flew past a:21.55 in the first quarter, Campanelle continued to rank and patiently parked in third with: 44.73 half. The bay is as wide as five and the outside is as terrifying as Storm Bay (Kantharos), who followed the leader all the way, measured the wire. The two fought late and together they drove down the road, not wanting to give way at all. Campanelle pushed ahead and Bay Storm fought back, but Campanelle’s class prevailed to get her attention as Bay Storm had to take the runner-up after narrowly clinching her first ranked win.
“She’s a boxer,” said Barbara Banke, who runs the Silk Street Stonestreet Stables that Campanelle runs. “She’s super fast, and she won’t leave anyone around if she can help. [Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr.] cut a little close, but she’s really good.”
Ortiz agrees: “I love her. She is the kindest person, fun to ride. She is very good. Today she took the lead a little earlier. I hit her a few times. She responded, so I dropped the cane and kept busy with her. Maybe she was a little confused. But she found it dirty and fought back.”
Genealogical notes:
Standing at Tally-Ho Stud in Ireland, Kodiac (GB) counted 37 group/classified winners out of its 81 Northern Hemisphere black winners. Two – Campanelle and English GSW Shaden (Ire) – do not belong to the Namid mares (GB), a pretty good statistic as they represent exactly a third of the bet winners who are Namid girls. Tally-Ho, who has also bred Campanelle, bought her dam for 39,000gns at Tattersalls in July 2016, received Exceed And Excel (Aus) from her in 2017, and bred quickly. her with Kodiac, resulting in Campanelle, the last reported pony out of Janina (GB).
