Stephen Lawrence killer David Norris sending selfies from jail with illicit mobile, says report | UK News

One of Stephen Lawrence’s killers has been placed in solitary confinement in prison after he allegedly grabbed a cell phone and sent a selfie of himself in his cell to friends outside.

The Justice Department has confirmed it is investigating an alleged security breach involving David Norris, one of two men jailed for life in 2012 for the racist murder of a black teenager.

In May, an attempt to transfer Norris to an open prison was blocked by then-judicial secretary Dominic Raab due to concerns that he still posed a risk to the public.

And on Tuesday, the Daily Mail reported that Norris had sent photos of himself in his cell to friends outside, using his smartphone to call and text, log into Facebook and watch YouTube videos.

The newspaper said Norris updated his WhatsApp status to indicate he would eventually be released from prison, claiming he would “come home in 2 days to cheer you up”.

It also claims that he was seen wearing designer clothes and using an X-Box inside.

The Justice Department has warned inmates found with phones could spend longer in prison.

Under current rules, Norris will have the opportunity to apply to the parole board for legal release when he has served a minimum of 14 years and three months in prison.

A spokesman for the Prisons Authority said: “We do not tolerate the use of illegal phones in prison, and inmates found with them will face longer behind bars.

“We’ve invested £125m in tougher prison security measures – including X-ray body scanners that have stopped more than 20,000 attempts to smuggle contraband behind bars in the past two years .”

Separation

Norris has been quarantined while an investigation is underway and could face further punishment depending on its outcome.
