Earlier this week, Stellantis announces multi-year partnership with Qualcomm to collaborate and use the technology company’s products on the automaker’s models. Qualcomm technology will be used to improve every car model over the next decade, from in-car communications to integrated artificial intelligence. Maserati will be the first Stellanis brand to incorporate the automaker’s next-generation infotainment system. However, it’s not just the new computer system on the minds of executives at the auto giant.

In a statement announcing the deal, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said, “Qualcomm Technologies’ broad experience in the automotive sector and scale as a leader in semiconductors will enable us to I vertically integrated key elements of the new platform and more closely managed the complete electronics supply chain to provide access to the best technologies, allowing full volume potential of Stellantis and achieve our Dare To Go 2030 ambition. ”

Interestingly, Tavares mentions that Stellanis wants to manage its electronics supply chain more closely. It’s pretty It is rare for any automaker to establish a close partnership with a semiconductor manufacturer. Even so, it’s not surprising given the crowded sea of traffic without a computer chip. Last month, Stellantis was forced to suspend production twice in 17 days total at its Melfi plant in southern Italy because of semiconductor shortages. The Melfi plant produces the FIAT 500X as well as the Jeep Renegade and Compass.

Stellanis’ struggles to maintain a steady supply of chips are shared by the entire auto industry. Late last year, Stellanis also agreed to a deal with Foxconn for the Chinese chipmaker to produce chips specifically for the automaker. While these trade deals are encouraging future manufacturing figures, it will take at least a year until chip shortages start to ease. The pandemic has caused shortages, but it has worsened with Russia’s recent invasion of Ukraine.
