Steeplechase Star Snap Deciding Flat Horse Shadow Painting in Colonial Stock

Quick decision (Spin hard) may be the best jumper in the country, but his next assignment will be in a fair race, the $150,000 Colonial Cup on Wednesday at the Colonial Downs. As coach Jack Fisher sees it, he has nothing to lose. While he wants to win and doesn’t think that’s out of the question, Fisher said one of the reasons he’s in the race is that it should set up his horse for G1 Jonathan Sheppard S., a race for tickets on August 17 in Saratoga.

“If nothing else, this would be a good piece for Jonathan Sheppard S.,” he said. “I can get more into the horse by doing this. In this case, one race equals three works. Depending on where he’s done, we should pay for it a little.”

Take a close look at Snap Decision’s lifetime record and you’ll see a horse shouldn’t overtake its head in a ground stake race. Half-brother to Mr Speaker (Pulpit), winner of the 2014 GI Belmont Derby Invitational, Snap Decided to start his career for Phipps Stable and coach Shug McGaughey. He was 2 to 18 on the apartment, but finished third in GIII Palm Beach S. and third in Better Talk Now S.

Fisher reached out to the contacts and they agreed to sell.

“For one, they wanted to know that he was going to a good home,” Fisher said. “Secondly, he didn’t win those races. He was third, fourth, fifth. That’s the kind of horse I’d love to buy. I must give all credit to [co-owner] Charlie Fenwick because he’s all about males, Spin hard. I told him it’s not Spin hardit’s a dam [Salute]. She is a very good dam. But Charlie was right.”

Snap Decision, now eight years old, launched very quickly in 2019 and ended the year with a winning pair. He took his first 1st place win in dance at Iroquois S. 2021 and this year finished second at G2 Temple Gwathmey S. before winning another Iroquois, this time 7 1/4 in length. He finished first or second in 15 consecutive jump races.

After the Iroquois, Fisher had the choice to run Snap Decisive through jumps in the G1 AP Smithwick S. in Saratoga, but overcame the race because of the volume Snap Decisive had to carry. Fisher said he was told his horse would have to weigh 158 pounds during the race. The winner, Down Royal (Alphabet Soup), brought home 141 pounds.

“If I were to control him at Smithwick, I would put on weight,” he said.

Not wanting to go to Sheppard after three months of being fired, Fisher found the Colonial Cup. (A race with the same name used to be one of the key points on the tower track.) Can he win? Fisher is trying to approach the race realistically.

“I’ve seen them have a 1/2 mile race there on grass and I think he’s a good enough horse for him to belong,” Fisher said. “Rusty Arnold has a tough horse in Cellist (Big Blue Kitten). He won [GIII] Louisville S. in his final start. I’m not sure he can beat him, but I’m not really scared of anyone else. I don’t think the race is too short for him. I think it will be perfect.”

There aren’t many examples of the tallest towering horses winning the plane. In 1971, Sheppard-trained Wustenchef won a fair bet, Sussex Turf H., and a jump-over, Indian River Hurdle H., at the same meeting in Delaware Park. John’s Call ran four times through jumps before being transformed into a flat horse. In his second career, he was a two-time Class I champion, champion of the 2000 GI Turf Classic Invitational S. and the 2000 GI Sword Dance Invitational.

Fisher says that if Spun decides to come back with a major push in the Colony, he might be tempted to run him again on the apartment. But he says the rule of his profession is that once a tower cross trainer buys a horse from a flat racehorse, that horse should only compete in jump races. He said he will keep that in mind when making future decisions.

Forest Boyce had horseback riding duties in Snap Decisive and gelding was assigned 122 pounds, 36 pounds less than he carried in Iroquois 2022 at three miles. It’s been three years and four months since he last raced on the surface, finishing third in the 1/8-mile dirt race at the Aqueduct. Since then, he has become one of the best jumpers in the sport. Does that mean he’s good enough to compete in the $150,000 unclassified bet race on the exchange? Questions will be answered on Wednesday at Colonial Downs.
