Statues toppled and armed police deployed
Thousands of Venezuelans have taken to the streets in Caracas and elsewhere after President Nicolás Maduro claimed victory in the country’s disputed election. Videos showed crowds gathering in the Venezuelan capital as riot police confronted protesters, while a statue of former president Hugo Chávez was toppled in Coro. The opposition has rejected Maduro’s claim of victory as fraudulent and says their candidate Edmundo González won a convincing 73.2% of the vote.
