San Diego digital marketing firm SOCi said Tuesday it has raised $120 million in a tough funding environment for startups to boost artificial intelligence in software platforms. — including integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT to respond to online reviews.

The company will also use the additional capital to expand into new markets, including manufactured goods. This amount brings the total amount raised by SOCi to $230 million since it was founded in 2012.

SOCI’s software targets brands with multiple locations, such as Ace Hardware, Jersey Mike’s, Kumon, and Ford. It helps them manage and collect data from their search and social media presence through a centralized platform—and especially their reputation on review sites.

The company, led by neuroscientists and data scientists, has been developing a new line of “Genius” products to further exploit artificial intelligence and machine learning models for automation digital marketing and decision making.

As part of that effort, SOCi announced last month that their online review response software tool—which integrates with major review sites including Google, Facebook, and Yelp—has been exploiting ChatGPT. to provide personalized, tailored responses to each reviewer.

“In an organization that is receiving reviews across thousands of locations, this can expose thousands of individuals to the responsibility and costs of responding, and reduce it to just a handful of individuals at the company viewing auto-answer list review,” says Afif Khoury, managing director and SOCI co-founder, in an email in response to questions. “The savings and efficiency are unmatched, and more importantly, the customer experience and brand reputation are the healthiest ever.”

ChatGPT, a synthetic AI chatbot, has been a hit in the business world since its release in November. It can respond to prompts in a thorough, human-like, and conversational way.

But it’s also caused controversy over its potential downsides, such as using it for school assignments or writing malicious computer code. Major tech companies including Microsoft have touted the technology as potentially disrupting Internet search, while others see it as job removal.

When asked if using ChatGPT to respond to reviewers might alienate them, Khoury said: “Ultimately, it’s our responsibility to build AI solutions to deliver more than just experiences. responsive, but also a customized experience so every customer feels heard and gets the attention and answers they seek.”

The company employ 600 workers. The funding round was led by JMI Equity, with participation from Vertical Venture Partners, Blossom Street Ventures and strategic investor Renew Group Private Ltd.—owner of 5-Hour Energy International.
