Count Christian Standhardinger was among those impressed with how well the San Miguel Beer machine performed in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governors Cup under the new coach.

“I think coach Jorge [Gallent] doing really well,” striker Barangay Ginebra said after a narrow 102-99 loss to the Beermen on Friday.

“You see their adjustments. I have to give him credit. In my opinion his adjustments are going right and you feel the difference in coaching. That’s why they also had such a good season,” he continued.

Standhardinger and the defending champions found themselves playing catch for most of the match at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao. They led by 15 points despite sharing more, making 27 assists to the Beermen’s 20 and shooting slightly more efficiently.

Standhardinger finished with 29 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists and although he had limited vision of how Gallent would run things, he was at the forefront of his coaching time. Former employee Leo Austria worked for the Beermen. The former No. 1 player of Filipino and German descent came on from the bench under Austria and won two titles with San Miguel before being transferred to NorthPort and made his way to the famous club.

Gallent won multiple games against the Beermen and won over Ginebra, the seventh of the team’s eight games, sending San Miguel into the quarterfinals with a few games left.

The Beermen, the defending Philippine Cup champions, are also racing for a playoff spot, which means they can defend their two-beat record in the playoffs and their path to a second crown of the season. This is smoother.
