St Mirren 0 – 1 Motherwell

Caring manager Steven Hammell led Motherwell to her first 10-day win on the tournament’s opening day since 2016 when Kevin van Veen’s penalty resulted in a 1-0 win at St Mirren.

Van Veen scored in the 42nd minute after Scott Tanser was penalized by referee John Beaton for playing the ball with his hand.

The visitors had Ricki Lamie come on in the 82nd minute but kept only their fourth win of 2022, half of which was against St Mirren.

The hosts were left behind by some poor finishes and the excellence of Motherwell’s goalkeeper Liam Kelly, who made two excellent saves.

Hammell has less than 48 hours to prepare for the Paisley trip following the departure of Graham Alexander following Motherwell’s 3-0 aggregate defeat to Sligo Rovers in the Europa Conference League.

Motherwell’s academy director, who made a post-war record 583 appearances for the club, stuck with Alexander’s preferred 4-3-3 formation but made three changes.

Callum Slattery was suspended from school, along with Bevis Mugabi and Ross Tierney, when Sondre Solholm, Sean Goss and Connor Shields joined.

The fixture list pitted Hammell against his former boss and Alexander’s predecessor Stephen Robinson, who before the game dismissed reports that Motherwell had rated him back at Fir Park as ” meaningless”.

Robinson, who has studied under six former Motherwell players, is also looking for a promotion after St Mirren’s Premier Sports Cup exited the league.

The opening quarter was messy with the main incident being the clash between Mark O’Hara and Paul McGinn. The latter hit sent off the field, sending Stephen O’Donnell back into action in the 19th minute.

Scottish right-back Fir Park’s career has been under review after falling out of favor under Alexander and he was not even given a pre-season appearance.

The game came to life as the Saints created a series of chances in the space of half an hour. Jonah Ayunga crosses in behind but finishes very well with his left foot.

Ryan Strain shot from over 10 yards after being better headed by Barry Maguire and Kelly quickly parried a superb one-handed header from Ayunga’s header before Solholm successfully saved Alex Greive.

The away team picked up and Tanser was penalized for saving Blair Spittal’s shot. The full-back protested his innocence before Van Veen misplaced Carson.

O’Hara did not reappear after the break and Tanser’s miserable day came to an end when he ruptured his hamstring in the 52nd minute.

The Saints created a steady stream of chances as Strain shot well after a clearance fell on him from close range, Keanu Baccus headed straight for Kelly from 12 yards and Curtis Main nodded from close range. than.

Goalkeeper Motherwell then overcame his save in the first half by throwing himself to the left to lead Main to a header from close range.

Lamie received a direct red card for a challenge with Baccus before being involved in a scuffle that saw Maguire and Ayunga booked.

Kelly made more saves against Main, Ayunga and Richard Tait as Motherwell continued with the help of homegrown midfielders Maguire, substitute Dean Cornelius and 18-year-old debutant Kian Speirs, who was come close to a late cut.

Hammell prepares for talks with Motherwell executives next week

Steven Hammell will be speaking to Motherwell executives next week after cutting his summer break short to win over St Mirren.

“I got the first few days off after about four years and then I got the phone call,” he said.

“I have to book a boat back. My car and family are still there so I’m leaving here to get them back and then come back Monday morning. So it’s been a hectic couple of days. motion.

“The chairman (Jim McMahon) spoke to me after the game and we’ll have a little chat over the next few days, with me and (chief executive officer) Alan Burrows, and see what’s best to do. what.

“Given the fans and the relationship I have with them, whatever they think is the best thing for the football club, we’ll get it then.

“The last couple of days, I haven’t thought of that. We want to win and we’ll chat over the next few days. I imagine that a lot of people are interested in it and hopefully we’ll have an answer. better word next week.”

Robinson removes Motherwell links

St Mirren coach Stephen Robinson dismissed a pre-match report that suggested he was Motherwell’s first choice to replace Alexander, who succeeded him at Fir Park.

“It’s not true in any way or form and I find it hard to believe that in modern society people can put that in writing and believe it’s not affected,” he said.

“It worries everyone at St Mirren but I’m fully committed to the work here.”

Robinson, who admitted referee John Beaton was correct in handing the penalty to Scott Tanser, added: “I think anyone can see that this is a game we shouldn’t have lost. I created a lot of chances but met a goalkeeper in
inspirational form. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen such a great performance.

“We had chances where we didn’t test Liam, but with the form he’s having, I’m not sure how we’re going to score.”

What’s next for St Mirren and Motherwell?

St Mirren returns to action next week with a trip to Aberdeen on Saturday 6 August; begins at 3pm, when Stephen Robinson’s side want to score with the first points in the new season of the Scottish Premiership.

Motherwell, meanwhile, plays the first game of the new season at Fir Park against St Johnstone next Saturday on 6 August; start at 3pm. It remains to be seen whether Steven Hammell will continue to take charge of the care.
