Spurs hire former WNBA All-Star Candice Dupree as assistant
The San Antonio Spurs have found a replacement for Becky Hammon.
Shams Charania by The Athletic Friday report that Spurs are hiring former WNBA star Candice Dupree as an assistant to head coach Gregg Popovich’s team. The 15-year WNBA veteran retires after the 2021 season and continues to participate in the NBA Assistant Coach Program (ACP).
Dupree, 38, is a seven-time WNBA All-Star and won the championship with the Phoenix Mercury in 2014. She has also represented USA Basketball in numerous international competitions, including the World Championships and the World Cup. Women’s FIBA World Championship.
The Spurs have enjoyed great success with another WNBA assistant turned NBA star in Hammon, who served on Popovich’s staff from 2014 to 2022. Now, Dupree is set to join the San organization.
