Since being classified in 2006, John B. Connally Turf Cup Stakes (G3T) at Sam Houston Park Only one horse won the race more than once. That difference belongs to Larger image who won three consecutive awards from 2017-2019.
But in this year’s edition, set for January 28, the race’s final two winners will contend for a second Connally title on the track.
Spooky channel The 2021 Connally winner, is looking to rebuild a successful track return after a 14-month hiatus as he recovers from a tendon injury.
Pulling down the ramp in Buddy Diliberto Memorial Stakes at Fair Grounds, Spooky Channel won 2 1/4 lengths English pub .
Coach Jason Barkley said: “He was training really well so we decided to have him run at the Fair Grounds. “We considered retiring him, but he made a huge comeback and came through the race really well.”
Meanwhile, last year’s winner, Another mystery , is looking to recover from a sixth-place attempt in the H. Allen Jerkens Handicap. This will be his third appearance in Connally 1 and a half mile.
Due to recent Equine Herpesvirus positive in Gulfstream Park, Sam Houston Race Park will restrict the carriage of horses from Florida until further notice. This will affect three contestants: Runner-up 2020 Bemma’s son , Kinenos and Bay Street Money .
Rounding the field is Angel , logic legend , seaport , Risk management , Charming United States , Bright red and United States Navy Cross .
