Splitgate 2 Will Release on PS5 and PS4 in 2025 – PlayStation.Blog
When we released Splitgate on PS4 in the summer of 2021, we didn’t know what to expect. We certainly weren’t prepared for the millions of people jumping online who wanted to play our version of a first-person shooter. I think most developers start out with the intention of creating their dream game, but time, technology, experience, and a host of other factors often get in the way. With Splitgate, we created a game that we loved and that our amazing community embraced, but we didn’t create our dream game.
I truly believe Splitgate 2 is the game I dreamed of making when Nicholas Bagamian and I were in our Stanford dorm together and decided to put portals into a shooter.
We’ve been working on Splitgate 2 for a long time, and we’re excited to tell you more about it – but not just yet. We’ll have more to share in August.
For now, I can share the basics. Splitgate 2 is a multiplayer first-person shooter created with Unreal Engine 5. It’s free-to-play, has a faction system, and will be released on PS5 and PS4 in 2025. Oh, and of course, it has portals.
We launched Splitgate with 20 people, none of whom had ever made a game. Thanks to passionate players, Splitgate’s early success led to investments that allowed us to grow our team. I’m proud to work alongside industry veterans from Riot, Ubisoft, and many other developers responsible for some of my favorite games. 1047 Games is no longer a group of college grads hoping the servers don’t crash. We are a team of seasoned gaming veterans creating a AAA shooter that we hope will surprise, amaze, and delight you.
While it would be difficult to stop developing Splitgate in 2022, after much brainstorming with the team, I realized that the right path to the best possible version of the game required a true sequel. We had to start over, in some ways. That meant building from scratch in Unreal Engine 5, with completely new character models, new maps, new weapons, and even new portal walls and portals.
Even though we’re a multiplayer-only shooter with no single-player campaign, we’ve hired an amazing narrative writer to help flesh out our universe. One of the reasons we wanted to create Splitgate 2 in Unreal Engine 5 was to make sure we had some really cool character and weapon skins. That goes for the free base skins and weapons as well, which I made sure looked better than anything in our first game. From the visuals to the sound design to the gameplay, our goal is to deliver excellence to the player.
We had a few other goals when we started developing Splitgate 2. One was, “How do we keep this fun year-round?” That goal was closely followed by a primary goal: “Build a game that can last a decade or more.”
That means we thought long and hard about how to keep Splitgate 2 fresh and alive after launch. It wasn’t just about making sure we had plenty of content ready at launch. It started at the design foundation itself. While the first Splitgate was inspired by classic arena shooters, we realized that to create a modern game that would last, we needed to develop the tools for a deep and satisfying gameplay loop.
That really starts with our faction-based multiplayer mode, which we’re not ready to share details about right now. But you can see a lot of that in our announcement trailer.
There’s a lot more to come when Splitgate 2 launches on PS5 and PS4 in 2025. Add it to your wishlist now to make sure you don’t miss out.
