It’s been a while since we’ve heard any news from Ubisoft Fragmented cells movie — so long, in fact, that it’s no surprise to learn that the entire project was canceled (thanks for the heads up, European gamers).

That’s according to one of the producers officially attached to the project, Basil Iwanyk, who in an interview with directdescribed the adaptation as “one of those scrapped adaptations”.

When discussing its 10th anniversary John Wick franchise (for which he is also a producer), Iwanyk said that the Splinter Cell movie “would have been amazing”, but the team “couldn’t get it right, in terms of the script, in terms of the budget”.

You’ll find his full response below:

That movie would be amazing… It just couldn’t be done right, in terms of script, budget. But it will be great. We’ve got a million different versions of it, but it’s going to be difficult and awesome. That’s one of the people who’s gone, which is really sad.

The Splinter Cell movie was announced more than a decade ago, with Tom Hardy in the title role and Doug Liman (Edge of tomorrow, Bourne Identity, Tang Dynasty) is set to direction. It’s a pretty solid combination and one we could see in an action-packed adaptation. But the lack of any official word in recent years means today’s news comes as no surprise.

Of course, this is not the end all Splinter Cell adaptation. Netflix’s animated film is based on this series, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, got the first one teaser last month, giving us our first look at Liev Schreiber’s Sam Fisher.

What do you think about this cancellation? Are you still looking forward to the Splinter Cell movie? Let us know in the comments.
