Racing game modders can do some pretty cool stuff, like rendering previous language locked experience accessible for all to enjoy, or Add new stunning, transformative environmental effects for games that lack them. They can also recognize night visions, like what would happen if you drove your car around the venerable Spa-Francorchamps, which is only five times the size of its normal height.
This is a hell of Lightning Hotlapsdoing, according to YouTube data, appear to have been doing this in Project Vehicle. (YouTube could be wrong about that and I can’t tell this game is running just by the picture.) Using the F1 2022 chassis mod, they created something that can only appear in the racing theme. sports the worst dream craze one can imagine – an Ardennes forest with trees as tall as a six-story apartment building in New York City. Concrete barriers that you struggle to scale. Peaks and valleys are steeper than your average roller coaster. I liked it, but it also caused claustrophobia I didn’t know I had.
Even a modern F1 car has difficulty negotiating with this harsh terrain. The flood in Eau Rouge last summer will be deep enough to drown, if this is true. The car went through some random crash pattern just before the last two turns of the Spa, causing it to corner as it hobbled to complete a lap. The only problem is that the last chicane now happens to be steeper than the Corkscrew at Laguna Secaand of course, it’uphill. However, the driver somehow managed to do it.
Strangely disturbing as this video, in the early days of 3D polygon games, arcade racers of the 90s had some liberties regarding scale and altitude. Not completely this level, mind, but in a way you don’t see anymore. This mod reminds me of games like Cave’s Traveling King The Sprits on the Sega Saturn, or Mountain High Speed Racing Challenge as it is known in these sections.
Honestly, I have a soft spot for this blatant environmental reclamation. It makes the tracks stand out and more interesting, the realism is damned. When Gran Turismo Creator Kazunori Yamauchi was once asked why courses like Challenging Mountain and Deep Forest weren’t immediately moved over Gran Turismo Game (they finally made it GT7, of course) he says scale matters. And a lot of things were redesigned when those original circuits finally appeared in the latest installment. The trees that once stood tall enough on Trial’s back were straight to form verdant trees now leave some space for the sky, and the infamous final montage with a steep hill that could launch cars into a nearby overpass was omitted and completely reconstructed. Sure, that change is in the spirit of how an actual racetrack can be modified in a modern context for safety reasons, but it also robs us of the joy we can only have. possible in a game.
