Sony expects Microsoft to keep some Activision games diverse

Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard sent large-scale ripples throughout the industry. The deal is worth a whopping $68.7 billion, which exceeds the price tag of any other developer/publisher acquisition. Of course, it’s safe to assume that exclusive rights can be applied to some of the most successful IPs in recent memory, like Call of Duty. However, a Sony spokesperson spoke of the current sequence of events, confident that some of Activision Blizzard’s games will continue to maintain a cross-platform experience.

The spokesperson mentioned above spoke to The Wall Street Journal and said, “We expect that Microsoft will abide by the contractual agreements and continue to ensure that Activision games are cross-platform.” The debate around exclusivity also emerged when Microsoft acquired Bethesda. The Elder Scrolls franchise and whether it’s exclusive is also a question. We reported that Phil Spencer envisioned The sixth installment in Bethesda’s classic RPG series as an Xbox exclusive. However, he will also go on to say that the console launching outside of Xbox and PC will be on “on a case-by-case basis. “This same approach will likely apply to Activision Blizzard games, especially since Microsoft must honor any prior contracts in effect.

According to a Bloomberg Spencer reiterated that Activision games will continue to be developed on other consoles, “I’ll just say to players who are playing Activision Blizzard games on Sony’s platform: We have no intention of pulling community off that platform, and we’re still committed to that.”

On Sony’s Top 20 PlayStation 5 downloads and PlayStation 4 downloads in 2021, Call of Duty: Vanguard appears on the list as the second most popular PS5 title and the fifth most popular PS4 title. Furthermore, Warzone takes second place in the top 10 most downloaded free games on both PlayStation platforms. During the acquisition, Sony is also looking at expanding its games division.

Executive Vice President and CFO Hiroki Totoki said, “As a result of the acquisitions announced since the start of this fiscal year, the number of PlayStation studios will increase from four to 16 and the number of publishers development will increase by almost 20%. . We plan to stay active invest in our ability to grow in the future. “
