Right after the launch of Sonic Frontiers late last year, Sega and Sonic Team announced the roadmap 2023 includes three major content releases throughout the year. Now that we have three months in the calendar, Sonic Team is ready to release the first of three updates this week.
This first content release in 2023 is called “Sights, Sounds, and Speeds” and adds content across three areas of the game. First, the new challenge modes, which can be accessed after you complete the main story campaign, allow you to access the Cyber Challenge and Battle Rush via the title screen. The Cyber Challenge is a timed attack mode in which you play a number of linear Cyber stages of the game in succession with the goal of scoring the best time. Battle Rush is the same concept but applied to combat situations involving standard enemies, Guardians, and Giants.
Next, this content release adds a fan-favorite feature to today’s open world games: photo mode. Players can access the free roaming camera and take pictures (like the one used in the title of this article) via the pause menu.
Finally, players can access songs to listen to while speeding through the Starfall Islands through the new jukebox in the game. Players can choose from 13 songs instantly, with 40 additional songs that can be unlocked through exploring the Starfall Islands. By hunting down Sound Memories on each island, players can fill out their music catalog. While the press release only mentions that players can “listen to their favorite Sonic songs across the Starfall Islands”, the screenshot above seems to indicate unlockable tracks include: includes classic tracks like “Live & Learn” from Sonic Adventure 2.
This first content update of 2023 will go live on Wednesday, March 22, 5pm pacific/8pm east across all platforms. Content Update 2 is apparently expected to launch this summer and will add Sonic’s Birthdays, Open Area Challenges, and new Koco, while Update 3 will be out later in the year. now and will add new playable characters and a new story.
