She showed off her midriff in more minimal yet statement looks, from a backless YSL gown with a hemline by Anthony Vaccarello (and no shoes) to a crimson collarless The Row jacket (and no many more), and a soft white ribbed shirt. tank top with plain cotton twill pants.
“We’re watching a girl grow up. Of course, everything evolves,” says the stylist and personal shopper Liat Baruch, who started working with Grainge in 2021. “[Her sister] Nicole [Richie] has been my best friend for over 20 years, so I’ve known Sofia most of her life.”
Baruch and Grainge collaborated to explore ways to establish and develop a continuous expression of musical output, as a new style of new California: a fusion of high-low, contemporary and ultra luxurious (usually Chanel), youthful, yet sophisticated and trendy. —or create trends—but never follow trends. “’Quiet luxury‘ is an ongoing thing,” Baruch says, trying to define a tagline or quick description of Grainge’s aesthetic while also rejecting the word “timeless.” “I never thought about it in a specific box. Just a lot of things.”
Baruch recalls a favorite memory from March 2022, when she kind like Grainge in a black sleeveless and crewneck Tom Ford dress for Elton John’s The AIDS Foundation’s annual Oscars party. “[She and Elliot] looks so elegant. We’re dying for it,” Baruch says of the duo’s enthusiasm at this point, comparing the excitement to the more casual, laid-back look that is also Grainge’s signature. “It could even be a pair of great jeans from The Row, a tank top and a pair of sandals.”
The duo’s collaborative ethos culminated in Grainge’s three-day wedding in the South of France in April 2023. The wedding set the internet ablaze, sparking interest in the wedding celebrations are eventful and still popular fashion on Pinterest mood boards—beyond her wedding day Chanel style hat-trick. “We avoided doing anything too literal or loud,” Baruch adds. “We both agree that subtlety sometimes says more and [they] are bigger messages than what’s on your face.”
Baruch emphasizes that she approaches her work as a fashionista, not as a bride or stylist. Baruch, who incorporated a “something blue:” a periwinkle mock neck and long-sleeve slit dress by Khaite, one of Grainge’s favorite labels, accessorized with Manolo Blahnik crystal buckle heels and a clutch Van Gogh’s Olive Trees themed book by Olympia Le-Tan.
Baruch and Grainge prepared a full complement of accessories for each outfit, from shoes, handbags and sunglasses, meticulously recording them for reference. “We finished the album and there was no tension at all. It’s very funny. We got there and had everything planned out,” Baruch said. However, in keeping with the cool atmosphere of the South of France, spontaneity is always welcome.
