America’s most famous football reporter, Grant Wahl, passed away while covering the World Cup in Doha, Qatar, according to his brother, Eric.
Eric Wahl announced his brother’s death on Instagram on Friday night:
Wahl provided some details in his video, but said in the comments, “He collapsed at the stadium, was on CPR, was taken to the hospital by Uber, and died according to Celine. We just spoke to the State Department and Celine spoke to Ron Klain and the White House.”
Late last month, Wahl was briefly detained by Qatari officials while covering the World Cup because he was wearing a pro-gay shirt:
Qatar’s response to Wahl’s progressive views has led some to call for an immediate investigation into his death. However, there is no information on the cause of Wahl’s death other than what was shared by his family.
Grant Wahl was 48.
This is an evolving story. We will update more information as soon as it is available.
