SoCal Date of booking; Cal Expo may host a night race in ’23

The California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) on Thursday approved the 2023 schedule for the Southern California circuit, largely mirroring this year’s edition.

A final vote on Northern California’s schedule has been adjourned until the October meeting of the CHRB.

But a new idea that was mooted for the NorCal line during the September 15 meeting could be related to the Cal Expo state fair that hosts twilight or nighttime shows next year.

CHRB Vice President Oscar Gonzales cited concerns about dangerously high temperatures in July, when the Cal Expo is expected to receive a three-week schedule, was cited by CHRB Vice President Oscar Gonzales as a reason to leave the first post in the afternoon.

The Sacramento track has been fitted with lights for the mining meeting it conducts in other parts of the year.

“We are prepared to help the industry, as we have in the past,” said Rick Pickering, executive director and general manager of the California Exposition and State Fair. was the first time any NorCal stakeholder or CHRB member approached him about running under the lights.

“The first priority for us is the safety of people, riders, racing individuals and the safety of the horses. If that’s what it takes to have the best possible safe encounter, let’s take a look at that and see what it takes to make it happen,” Pickering said.

Pickering says there are no evening concerts using the horse-racing stands during the fair, and although fireworks shows are sometimes scheduled, they begin at 10 p.m., presumably after The race ended in the night.

“Heat is what we are paying attention to. And if that’s what we need to do to keep animals and people safe, your state fair wants to be cutting edge. We don’t want to be, “We thought about that after the fact.”

The CHRB annually awards weekly race day blocks that define simulation perks. One issue that arose Thursday was which SoCal racetrack would receive those privileges during the non-race buffer week between the county fairground meeting at Los Alamitos and Del Mar.

Del Mar was recently awarded the title of simulated forecast for that period, and it will continue to retain that week in ’23.

But the board included language in its approved offer that could move a week of simulation privileges to Los Alamitos in 2024. It doesn’t have to be a July week and could go elsewhere. during the calendar year, the CHRB discussed.

Gonzales changed its offer to approve a SoCal ’23 race date, so it states, “with an amendment that by 2024, it is the intention of the board to award a dark week with revenue streams.” that’s for Los Alamitos.”

The vote on SoCal day was 6-1, with commissioner Wendy Mitchell objecting.

Ahead of the vote, Mitchell had expressed concern about assuring license applicants of what council could vote on for 2024.

“I want us to look at the biennial calendar instead of just doing this especially when [track applicants] Mitchell said.

So SoCal ’23’s schedule will be as follows (again, with the allocation of dates in blocks and actual race dates to be approved by the CHRB just before each meeting):

Santa Anita-December. 21, 2022 to June 20, 2023

Los Alamitos (LA County Fair) – June 21 to July 11

Del Mar-July 12-September 12

Los Alamitos-September 13 to 26

Santa Anita-September. November 27 to 7

Del March-November. December 8 to 5

Los Alamitos-December. 6 to 19
