BMW has been spotted testing prototypes for an updated X5 that will hit the market soon.
The updates that are pegged for the popular mid-size SUV will form a mid-cycle update for the current fourth-generation X5, which arrives in 2018 as a 2019 model. Look for the updated version to come out. eyes in 2022 as a 2023 model. It will arrive with an updated version of the X6 relatedIt’s also testing.
Modifications to the exterior will be gentle, based on the prototype. Look for new interior parts for the lights and tweak the front and rear of the car. The interior is also likely to get some updates, including a more advanced infotainment system with a larger screen similar to what we see in iX electric SUV.
It’s unclear what the plans for the powertrain are, but more power and the addition of standard mild-hybrid tech are expected. In the US, the X5 is offered with the choice of a 3.0-liter inline-six or a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8. The Inline-6 is available in a plug-in hybrid guise while the V-8 may be available X5 CODE makes 600hp in standard guise and 617hp in the X5 M Competition model. Look for the V-8 to be replaced by the newly developed S68 unit, also a 4.4 liter twin turbo mill, announced for the update 2023 X7 and redesigned 2023 7-Series.
Don’t expect a battery-electric powertrain, at least with this generation. BMW is fulfilling that role with the aforementioned iX. One electric fuel cell version will launch in 2022, albeit for demonstration purposes only.
Production of the X5 for sale worldwide is carried out at the BMW Group plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. In the US alone, sales hit 60,725 units last year, the best result in the brand’s history.
