Kill the tower is still a hugely popular deck-building roguelike, so it naturally invites a sane player mod community added interesting content to the game – including goofy googley eyes. One of the most popular mods of Slay The Spire is called Downfall, a huge fan-made expansion that has added loads of playable characters, a new mode, etc. That developer – Table 9 Studio – is now back with their own unmodified game: a fantasy, auto-battle roguelike game called Chess. Story & Strategy.
Tales & Tactics revolves around The Grand Tournament, a competition that pits upcoming leaders against each other for fame and fortune. The steam page says each enemy will have their own unique abilities and personalities, but what I find most interesting are the Tournament Champions who seem to remember and react to you in a beautiful Shadow Of Mordor twist . These are the “famous commanders” who are invited back to the competition from time to time and I am happy to see their fond memories.
However, you will gain more than a few long-term competition – this is a roguelike after all. During the competition, you will collect units with different strategies, abilities, and prototypes. Before the battle, you need to align your party with the pieces that go well together, then unleash them in auto-battle. You can also combine three pieces for a buffed unit, and equip each unit with stat-boosting gear – including adorable hats.
The trailer suggests that you can also control the grid-based board, hindering and/or helping your party of miniature orcs, creaking dragons, and junglers. Lots of strategic planning to look forward to, but I was also excited to interact with a bunch of fictional enemies. Tales & Tactics has a vague “coming soon” release window, but for now, you can put the indie game on your wish list Steam.
