Nissan’s custom tube-framed Group 5 machines of the 80s drew racing fans to showrooms with their powerful performance and aggressive styling that didn’t stray too far from road cars. on which they are based. The most popular in that group – Skyline Super Silhouette – comes Gran Turismo 7 on Thursday, alongside the classic Maserati and Porsche’s contribution to the trio of early 2010s hypercars.

Skyline Super Silhouette has a fascinating history our old friend Raphael Orlove discovered a few years ago. Pretty much everything about the Silhouette under the skin is based on the current R30 Skyline, but Nissan was able to highlight the car in the exterior design, with its impressive chin splitter, turbine-style wheels and very wide, very fenders and sharp spoiler. Just looking at this car gives me a corneal paper cut. I can live with it.

Its engine – the 2.1-litre, turbocharged, dual-cam LZ20B – formed the basis of Nissan’s flagship motorsport activities at the time. This engine produces 570 horsepower in the lap, on par with what Formula 1 cars have worked with. LZ20B incorporated in several Nissan Group C chassis, including Skyline Turbo C – a front engine prototype with a design far different from the road car with which it shares the same name. It’s unreliable, fans are said to hate its styling, and Nissan won’t really figure out the category until the end of the decade.

However, the Skyline Super Silhouette is an icon. It inspired the Bōsōzoku trend of wild-looking cars and motorcycles with sky-high exhausts and disproportionate aerodynamic details. After a while, you will get used to it Gran Turismo fans played GT2 back in the day – where it was called “Skyline R30 Silhouette Foumula(Sic). Spelling is one of the game’s confusing points, stemming from its rushed development.

In addition to that famous Skyline in this update, players will also get a chance to ride 918 Spyder – Porsche’s last flagship has one notable omission from both GT7 and GT Sport. Since both games feature LaFerrari and McLaren P1 (in the GTR version anyway), developer Polyphony Digital has now completed a trio of hybrid supercars of the last decade. The Maserati A6GCS/53 Spyder is the last of the new cars in this patch. This chassis – number 2078 – won the Gran Turismo Trophy at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2014.

Unfortunately, there are no new songs for July, but there’s a little more in this update beyond cars. Skyline Silhouette received outstanding funding from Japanese diecast producer Tomica, and so Polyphony seized the opportunity to add a new Scapes location called Tomica Town to the site. GT7. Here you can take pictures of your vehicles in small car dioramas, it’s just the coolest idea ever. The new content will land on July 28 at around 2 a.m. Eastern time.
