It wouldn’t be fair to say Skoda played it safe with the new Octavia. Improvements to the exterior styling, on-board technology and quality of materials in the cabin help create a sharper look and provide a true statement of the Czech manufacturer’s intentions.

Octavia has been fine-tuned in all the right areas without sacrificing space, its practicality, and its excellent all-round usability. It may cost a little more to buy, but Skoda is still focused on delivering a complete, versatile hatchback that’s fit to have the best in its class.

While still available in five-door estate or hatchback body styles, Skoda has reduced the trim levels available for the Octavia to include SE, SE L and vRS.

Skoda offers three petrol engines for the Octavia: a 1.0-litre TSI unit with 109bhp, a 1.5 TSI that produces 148bhp and a 2.0 TSI that produces 242bhp. Diesel power comes from a 2.0-liter TDI unit that delivers 148 hp or 197 hp. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, although optional DSG automatic transmission.

Octavia is the first Skoda to feature light hybrid technology. The 1.0-liter and 1.5-liter TSI engines can be electrified with a 48-volt belt-starter and 48-volt lithium-ion battery for improved performance.

A new one Dip into the mixture variant combines a 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to produce a combined 201bhp and 350Nm of torque. A more powerful 242bhp version is fitted to the vRS version, with Skoda claiming it is capable of up to 28 miles on battery power alone.

Octavia starts at around £23,000, puts it in the middle of a Golf course that costs over £25,000 and SEAT Leon at £22,000.
