Single: “Whether it’s love or an arranged marriage, there’s no guarantee of eternal happiness”

Suhaanvi Singh, 34, the CEO of a customer service company, has never been in a relationship and she loves being single. She took life lessons from several couples who had had a disastrous marriage and realized that she was happy without all of those “dramas”. We asked Singh how singleness treats her and here’s what she shared with us.

Do you get annoyed when people ask why you’re single?

No, I just found it interesting. It’s interesting to see my life, my freedom bothers some people so much.

Why do you think celibacy is questioned so much?

It’s like this herd mentality. Even when we don’t want to ask and know what’s going on in other people’s lives, our social discussions and atmosphere at home force us to do so. We ask because we feel we should be as “society does”. There are many things that we ourselves don’t believe in, deep down, but we are so worried that if we don’t, people will add us to their black sheep list.

What are the weirdest, funniest questions you’ve ever been asked about being single?

I don’t know if it’s weird because it’s more obvious… I was asked about my gender and preference for the opposite sex because there seemed to be no other reason why I didn’t want to get married.

What strengths do you find in the power of being single?

Everything! I like not being tied down to one person, I love my freedom, I love going home to just my bed and where I can be! Life is so much simpler, without drama and arranged without a spouse. I love my own company so I’m good.

Have you ever had moments of weakness when you wished you weren’t single?

I miss a partner when I was feeling lazy and I needed to get work done. Regarding love, I get it from my friends and even dogs. My puppies love me unconditionally. Regarding sex, I get enough.

Did past relationship experiences play a role in your choosing to be single? What made you realize or decide that you no longer want a partner?

Many people believe that a past relationship that turned sour can ruin someone’s life but that was not the case with me. However, it was someone else’s bad experience that I learned from. I realized that whether it was love or arrangement, there was no guarantee of eternal happiness. In those days I was not familiar with Buddhism and I converted everything into spirituality and found myself again. So it all played a role and today I’m happy. I live for myself, my parents and I are content.

A few pieces of advice for the women and men out there who are thinking about being single, try not to fall under the pressure of “society”.

Go ahead and live your life. You should know what you want and that’s all you need. As long as you’re clear, you should take your time to live the life you want. After all, this is your life. Your life, your rules! Just have a good savings account for your future.
