Former world No. 1 Simona Halep will not have to face Australian wildman Daria Saville in round 2 of the Miami Open as previously scheduled.
Each Reuters (h/t ESPN), Halep took to Twitter Thursday to confirm a foot injury that has plagued her since she advanced to the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells last week will cause her to miss the Miami Open and a few weeks after the operation.
“I’ve been struggling with my thigh since the Indian Wells semi-final and hopefully it will improve, but I went for an MRI last night and unfortunately it was torn,” the 30-year-old explained. “My body needed time to recover and as a result I would be out for three weeks. This meant I had to make the super tough decision to withdraw from Miami, Charleston and the Fed Cup.
“While I feel really disappointed to share this news, I’ve kept my confidence from my great start to this year and am motivated to do everything to get ready for the season on the pitch. clay.”
Halep, who missed time with a calf injury last year, fell in front of Iga Swiatek at Indian Wells. Swiatek, meanwhile, continued defeat Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-1 in the final and is currently 2nd in the world rankings.
