Broadcaster Simon Thomas has thanked hospital staff following the birth of his young daughter, who was born eight weeks premature after his wife was “seriously ill”.
“Not everything in life goes according to plan,” Thomas wrote in a social media post, sharing a picture of his wife Derrina and their newborn baby at Stoke Mandeville hospital in Buckinghamshire.
The birth of his young daughter comes 5 years after he lost his first wife, Gemma, who died just days after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

He wrote: “One moment we thought we had eight weeks left until our little one was born; the next, after Derrina’s rapid illness, we unexpectedly welcomed a baby. very small but extremely precious girl weighing just over three years old.
“The #neonatal team at #stokemandeville hospital was simply unbelievable and held our hands both physically and mentally throughout a day of fear and stress yesterday.
“I can’t express how proud and blessed I feel right now – I have a beautiful, brave wife in @derrina, a precious son and now a little daughter, wonderful and sister to our boy Ethan.”
Thomas said the baby will be hospitalized “for the next few weeks; but we have the best team around us”.
