Simon has often been outspoken about his late wife’s tragic death and last month said his new wife Derrina was grappling with ‘guilt’ ahead of Gemma’s death anniversary.
Appearing on Kate Ferdinand’s Blended podcast, he said he views the anniversaries of his first wife’s death as simply a ‘mark of time’.
But Derrina feels the family should do more to celebrate her life for the sake of Ethan, whom Simon shares with Gemma.
Simon said: ‘I think sometimes you have to struggle a bit with guilt, especially around anniversaries. I’m very comfortable with anniversaries because I don’t think too much about them.
‘I think the first year when you go through a loss, those firsts are huge and each first is an obstacle to overcome, but over time it gets easier.
‘I’m not a person, any anniversaries want to do something particularly meaningful. To me, they’re just markers of the timing. But from Ethan’s point of view it’s a ‘Do you want to do something?’ question. ‘
Simon explains that while Derrina often wants to mark an anniversary, Ethan often prefers a big date, perhaps sending a ‘ball with a little message’ rather than a big event.
‘I think sometimes she feels we should do more because of the guilt you feel, that maybe we’re not doing enough, and I try to reassure Derrina and say it’s fine.
Derrina shared her new husband’s grief, noting that she was more emotional than Simon and Ethan over Gemma’s last two anniversaries, despite never having met her.
