‘My heart goes out to her family for the pain they’ve endured at the hands of someone considered Lynette’s teammate, not her killer.’

Dawson, 74, spent his first night behind bars after being found guilty of murdering his first wife 40 years ago.

The ruling, delivered by NSW Supreme Court judge Ian Harrison after a 10-week trial, ended a mystery that has haunted the Lynette family and northern Sydney beaches for four decades.

In her decision, Justice Harrison agreed with Crown’s argument that Dawson was motivated to kill his wife in order to gain ‘uncontrolled’ access to his teenage girlfriend JC.

He also ruled that Dawson had a deep hatred for Lynette and wanted to escape the financial and guardianship implications of a divorce.

Justice Harrison said: ‘I am pleased that he is determined to kill his wife,’ and it is also the financial motive that makes him likely to lose the investments’.

Justice Harrison said that the possibility of losing JC in early 1982 could also have been the motive for the murder.

Justice Harrison said the evidence did not reveal how Dawson killed Lynette, or where her body is now.

There were gasps in the courtroom at the time Dawson was found guilty – after about 4.5 hours the judge read out his reasons – with Dawson shaking his head very slightly and his twin brother Paul. he whispered ‘bull***’.

Two prison officers entered the room and handcuffed him. Dawson appeared to be limping as he was led away to be taken into custody. He will be locked up at Silverwater Correctional Center pending sentencing.

The ruling by NSW Supreme Court judge Ian Harrison follows a 10-week trial ending a mystery that has haunted the Lynette family and the northern Sydney beaches for four decades.
