Shawn Porter ranks Ugas above Spence

Via Chris Williams: Shawn Porter unexpectedly revealed today that he feels Yordenis Ugas is a better fighter than Errol Spence Jr. when evaluating his past opponents.

Through fans when hearing Porter say he ranks Ugas (27-4, 12 KOs), Keith Thurman and Terence Crawford above Spence.

Porter doesn’t even mention whether Spence is #4 on his list, which makes you wonder if he believes that someone else like Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is better than him. or not.

Shawn Porter’s Top 3:

1. Terence Crawford
2. Keith Thurman
3. Yordenis Ugas

The way that Porter gives most of his praise to Keith Thurman is odd, as he clearly isn’t considered one of the elite after nearly three years out of the ring.

In 2016, Porter lost to Thurman in the 12th round when they were both at the peak of their careers, and it was pretty straightforward. Thurman took control of the action.

“I think he will [Ugas] flirt with #3 in terms of competition,” said Shawn Porter when asked to rate Yordenis Ugas. “#1 and #2 are Terence Crawford and believe it or not, Keith Thurman,” Porter said as he made it clear that he doesn’t rate Spence in the top 3 of past opponents despite losing to him in 2019.

“I know a lot of people will expect me to say, Errol Spence Jr.,” Porter said sourly. “People talk about the intelligence Errol has, Keith Thurman is extremely smart.

“I would be remiss if I didn’t say on the Porter Way Podcast he came over and shared with me how he broke the fight before we got into the ring.

“Keith is currently in a position where I think we will see his intelligence more than anything else he has to offer. We love strength, but at some point, if you don’t focus on strength and you don’t continue to develop your strength, that’s been something Keith since we were kids,” said Porter. while raving about Thurman.

Unfortunately, Chris Williams has serious doubts about whether Thurman can become a major player. After three years out of the ring, Thurman wasn’t nearly good enough in his recent win over Mario Barrios to pick him to beat Spence, Crawford, Jaron Ennis, Vergil Ortiz Jr, or even Ugas.

Thurman was physically damaged by Barrios, and it was a guy no less than Spence, Ennis, Crawford or Ortiz. As for Thurman, he was too fragile to beat any superior opponent.

Also, Thurman has a tendency to disappear for a long time after he defeats important opponents. Who knows how long we’ll be before we see Thurman rematch after his win over Barrios last February. A conservative estimate by Chris Williams would be a year before we see Thurman back in the ring again.

“After that went away and I followed that from watching other pros when you couldn’t keep up with hand speed and speed and someone was stronger here [mentally]That’s where you win the war.

“When we talk about some of the smarter boxers in the game, we should be talking about Keith Thurman.

“Both,” Porter said when asked who he wanted to see who won the Spence-Ugas between Terence Crawford and Keith Thurman.

“I know it’s hard for me to put bias aside, but even if I did, I think Keith Thurman would have had with any of those top three guys great battles.

“It’s no secret that Terence Crawford is the guy. A fight between Yordenis and Terence Crawford would be awesome.

“Of course, we’ve been waiting for a fight between Spence and Crawford for a while. I enjoyed eating pepper at Keith Thurman. I think those matches will also be interesting,” said Porter.
