Pervez Musharraf died Sunday after a long illness, at the American Hospital in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates after years of self-imposed exile. He was 79.

Musharraf’s organs were malfunctioning because of a disease called amyloidosis. This disease affects connective tissues and organs, inhibiting normal functioning. It is a rare disease caused by the accumulation of an abnormal protein called amyloid in organs and tissues throughout the body.

Pervez Musharraf is known as the architect of the Kargil war who ordered his soldiers into India to cut off Leh from Srinagar.

During the war that took place in the summer of 1999, Pakistani soldiers, whose presence he denied, were annihilated in the high mountains of Kargil. It was a catastrophic military defeat for Mr. Musharraf, who pushed the plan and barely let his Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif know.
