Shakur Stevenson loses title on scale for fight with Robson Conceicao
Via Robert Segal: WBC/WBO super featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson lost two titles across the weight classes on Thursday after weighing 131.6 lbs for the fight against Robson Conceicao at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Stevenson (18-0.9 KOs) chose not to undress or use the two hours allotted to him to shed the extra weight.
The move upset Conceicao (17-1, 8 KOs) as he felt Stevenson was unprofessional and set a bad example for his hometown of Newark. Conceicao made weights at 129.6 lbs.
Stevenson went up to 135 in the next game, so maybe he doesn’t see weighing this Conceicao matchup as important to him. Given that, he vacated his 130-lb WBC & WBO titles anyway.
You can immediately see the size difference between Stevenson and Conceicao when both put on the scale. Stevenson looks bigger and less cropped.
When Shakur arrived heavily, they brought the body shield to let him take off, but he shook his head, letting them know he didn’t care. That shows Stevenson doesn’t care that he’s sacrificing his WBC & WBO belts.
When Stevenson moves to 135, he can vacate the winner of the Devin Haney vs. George Kambosos Jr II.
“Yesterday he said I was fake. So he shows the world who’s the fake one,” Conceicao told Fighthype about Shakur Stevenson being underweight during Thursday’s weigh-in. “This guy is not professional.
“He should set an example for your hometown [Newark]and that shows the opposite. He is not an example; he is not professional. So that’s a shame for all of the boxing world.
“Certainly, even if he pressed for weight, I would take his belt. I know I’ll take his belt. I don’t care if he keeps the belt or he doesn’t deserve it anymore. My function is to get the belt.
“I will take the belt home. I don’t talk as much as he does. So I’m a professional athlete in the ring and don’t talk as much as he does. So if he wants to say, it’s scary about him. Tomorrow, I will show the world that I am a professional athlete.
“Any kind of champion and pound-for-pound has to be an example to the world. So that’s not what he is. He’s not an example,” Conceicao said.
