Shakur Stevenson “down to fight Vasyl Lomachenko”

Via Allan Fox: Three days after his career-best win over Oscar Valdez, WBC/WBO super featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson says he’s “down” to face Vasyl Lomachenko next.

Unfortunately, former 3-division world champion Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) is defending his homeland Ukraine against a Russian invasion.

Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) is said to be stationed in Odessa, which is under Russian shelling. So there is no telling when Lomachenko will be free to continue his career.

Lomachenko, 34, last game in December, beat Richard Commey by unanimous decision 12 rounds. Unless Lomachenko decides to leave Ukraine while they are at war with Russia, Shakur won’t stand a chance to fight him.

Back after the war, you could argue that Lomachenko would need at least one, if not two, warm-up fights to prepare for the battle against Stevenson.

Perhaps it was better for Lomachenko to focus on pursuing the winner of the undisputed lightweight bout between George Kambosos Jr. and Devin Haney instead of focusing on facing double-belt defense artist Stevenson.

Stevenson (18-0.9 KOs) wants to be the undisputed champion at 130, but he’s conflicted, also wanting to take on one of the more prominent names.

The two belts Stevenson needed to become the undisputed featherweight superweight champion were held by WBA champion Roger Gutierrez and IBF champion Kenichi Ogawa.

“I am ready for a fight with Vasyl Lomachenko. I do not duck do not act. I don’t care who it is, I will keep the energy. I’m disappointed by that kind of fighting. Truth be told, I was torn between all the belts and a big fight,” Shakur Stevenson told DAZN Boxing Show.

If Stevenson wants a big fight in the short term, he should focus on his next game against Emmanuel Navarrete instead of wasting his time facing the little-known super champs Gutierrez and Ogawa.

There will be a lot of interest from boxing fans in the fight between Shakur and Navarrete. It will feature more action than last Saturday’s match between Stevenson and Valdez, 31.

It was a disappointing match because Valdez looked mentally defeated even before the match.

When Valdez attacked, he limited his success by advancing slowly behind a tall guard and not attacking in the fast, relentless style we’ve seen from Robeisy Ramirez, the boxer. finally defeat Shakur.

Ideally, Stevenson needs to move up to 135 and take on Ryan Garcia, Gervonta Davis and Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero.
