After publicly denying that she did not pay taxes on income earned between 2012 and 2014, Shakira will officially face charges in court in the tax fraud case against her, NBC News confirmed. A judge in Spain approved Shakira’s trial on September 27. In 2018, the singer allegedly failed to pay nearly $14 million in taxes. Prosecutors are asking for a 8 years imprisonment. and fines if Shakira is found guilty in this case. The date of the trial has yet to be confirmed.

Shakira had previously rejected a plea agreement that she would not have had to go to court. She has continued to maintain her innocence following the charges against her. Prosecutors allege that Shakira spent more than half of her time between 2012 and 2014 in Spain, which is why they believe she should have paid taxes there. Although Shakira’s residence was in the Bahamas during that time, she was romantically involved with Gerard Piquereside in Spain.

Shakira recently shared about her decision to go to court and fight the charges against her. “These are false accusations,” she emphasized in an interview with Elle. “First of all, I didn’t spend 183 days a year at the time. I’m busy making my career commitments around the world. Second, I paid everything they allege I owed, even before they filed the lawsuit. So to this day, I don’t owe them. “

The 45-year-old also said that prosecutors tried to shake up public opinion by starting a “massive press campaign” against her. “Everyone knows that the Spanish tax office does this all the time, not just with celebrities like me, or [Cristiano] Ronaldo, Neymar Alonso, and more, it also unfairly happens to regular taxpayers,” she alleged. “It’s just their style. But I am confident that I have enough evidence to support my case and that justice will be in my favor.”

Shakira says Spanish tax authorities are trying to trace her money “no matter what” in the case against her. “They know I am not in Spain in time of need [to have to pay taxes], that Spain is not where I work or my source of income,” she stressed. “But they still chased me with an eye on the prize.”
